Hiatal Hernia Repair

Non-invasive robotic surgery for hiatal hernia repair

Hiatal hernia is a very common condition. Most people suffer few or mild symptoms that can be controlled by changes to diet and sometimes medication. When symptoms become more severe, however, surgery may be required. For the safest and least invasive surgery, we use the da Vinci Si Surgical System. The Heartburn and Acid Reflux Center is the only outpatient facility in the country that offers the da Vinci to patients.

In robotic surgery, the surgeon is in complete control of the instruments, but the specialized computer console and 3D, high-resolution optics give the surgeon unparalleled control and visualization. The physician makes tiny incisions, no bigger than a dime, through which the surgical instruments are inserted. With precise and accurate control, the surgeon is able to operate on tiny structures without damaging healthy tissues. This reduces the risk of complications, allows for quicker and less painful recovery, and allows patients to return to their normal activities sooner.

Hiatal hernia occurs when the upper portion of the stomach pushes through the diaphragm and protrudes into the chest, causing stomach acid to flow out of the stomach and up into the esophagus. This causes gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). commonly known as acid reflux. The symptoms include the traditional “heartburn” feeling, throat irritation, belching, and chronic cough. More serious cases may cause severe pain, nausea, and vomiting. If untreated, GERD can cause serious, long-term, and potentially life-threatening problems, including esophageal cancer.

To repair a hiatal hernia, the surgeon tightens the opening between the stomach and esophagus. This often involves pulling the stomach back below the diaphragm and closing the opening in the diaphragm muscle.
